For practice pads

Learn drums on a practice pad.

A pad and a pair of sticks cost about $30. Put your phone next to the pad, and Badum listens through the microphone and tells you how close to the beat each hit was.

The first lesson, Count to four: blocks scroll toward the line while Badum counts along.
  • It hears the pad

Badum counts you in, then goes quiet so the microphone hears only you. Your hands are checked; your foot keeps time with the band.

  • Quiet enough for a flat

A rubber pad is about as loud as typing. Play with headphones in the phone and nobody else hears the band.

  • Real beats, not only drills

The same path as on a kit: count, the basic beat, loud and soft, your first song. When a kit arrives, pick it and carry on.

Try a pad warm-up

Hands on the pad, one note on every eighth, right then left. Tap your foot on each beat. Start slow; speed comes later.

Questions

Which pad should I get?

Any 10 to 12 inch rubber or mesh pad, and a pair of 5A sticks. Put it on a stand or a table at about waist height.

Does it work on an acoustic kit too?

Yes. On a kit, a one-minute setup teaches Badum your kick, snare and hi-hat, so it can tell them apart.

Is my playing recorded?

No. The microphone is used on the phone to time your hits. Nothing is recorded, stored or sent. Privacy
